The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and 15 Regional Transit Authorities (RTAs) are in charge of fixed route bus service and paratransit van service in cities and towns throughout Massachusetts. Seniors, people with disabilities, and children qualify for reduced-cost transportation and other special services. In some cases, MassHealth and other benefit programs pay transportation costs for medical appointments, child care, or jobs.

The MBTA and Regional Transit Authorities (RTAs) provide public bus transportation along fixed routes in cities and towns throughout Massachusetts. Seniors, people with disabilities, and children who ride the buses on regular routes are eligible for special discount bus fares.
Special curb-to-curb van services are available for people who cannot use the fixed route bus system because of a disability. Van service is also available to seniors for medical appointments and other transportation needs.
MassHealth members who need non-emergency transportation to and from medical appointments may be eligible for free dial-a-ride van or taxi service, or reimbursement for private or public transportation costs.
Access to Jobs provides up to six months of free transportation services for current and former TAFDC recipients who are transitioning from public assistance to work. Access to Jobs offers public transit commuter checks, free car ownership, and gas cards.
