Massachusetts housing programs help low-income households find and pay for clean, safe, affordable housing in public or privately owned units. Rental programs include Section 8, MRVP, and AHVP rent vouchers; private subsidized housing; or public housing. Homebuyer / homeowner programs help families buy, keep, and repair single and multi-family homes.

Homebuyer / Homeowner Programs

Homebuyer / Homeowner programs help families buy and repair single and multi-family homes. Homebuyers may be eligible for low mortgage interest rates, down payment and closing costs assistance, mortgage insurance, lead paint removal assistance, and homebuyer counseling.

Foreclosure Prevention Programs

If you are having trouble making your mortgage payments, you can get free help. Foreclosure counseling agencies will review your mortgage and finances with you, discuss your options, and help you find a solution. Your lender might be willing to modify your loan to make it more affordable, or you might be able to refinance your loan with a lower cost loan. Tenants in foreclosed buildings have legal rights and do not have to move out right away.

Making Home Affordable is President Obama's new refinance and loan modification program to help struggling homeowners keep their homes.

Section 8, MRVP, and AHVP Tenant-based Vouchers

Section 8, the Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program (MRVP), and the Alternative Housing Voucher Program (AHVP) offer tenant-based vouchers to help low-income families and individuals pay their rent. People with tenant-based vouchers can use their vouchers for any apartment they choose that meets the program requirements. Use the online Rental Assistance Eligibility Check to see if you might qualify for benefits. If you are a landlord who would like to know more about the Section 8 program, see our Landlord's Guide.

Privately Owned Subsidized Housing

Privately owned subsidized housing is affordable privately owned rental housing set aside for low and moderate-income families and individuals, elders, and people with disabilities. The government pays a subsidy (money) to the private owner, and in return, the owner charges low rents for the subsidized apartments. Use the online Rental Assistance Eligibility Check to see if you might qualify for benefits.

Public Housing

Public housing is affordable government-owned rental housing for low and moderate-income families and individuals, seniors, and people with disabilities. Use the online Rental Assistance Eligibility Check to see if you might qualify for benefits.

Supportive Housing and Long-Term Care

There are many housing choices for Massachusetts residents who cannot live safely on their own. These range from private housing with support services, to long-term group care facilities with full-time medical staff.

Household Goods and Services

Massachusetts residents can get free or low-cost household goods and services to help furnish their homes, repair their houses, pay for pet medical care, remove snow from their sidewalks, and meet other household needs.
