Reporting Fraud
If you want to report fraud, waste, or abuse in an assistance program, please follow the steps below. If a program is not listed, call the contact number for the program listed under Agency Contact Information.

MassHealth has a 24-hour toll-free fraud hotline where you can report fraud, waste, or abuse relating to MassHealth:
Hotline hours are Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, to speak to a person. At all other times, you can leave a voicemail message. You can use the hotline to report member or provider fraud, identification theft, or any other concern about misuse of MassHealth benefits and services. |
| Medicare |
The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is in charge of Medicare fraud prevention. You can report Medicare fraud in these ways:
You do not have to give your name. You should include the type of fraud, and whatever information you have about the person or organization that is committing the fraud. |
| Section 8 and other rent assistance programs |
The HUD Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is in charge of fraud prevention for Section 8. The OIG makes sure that HUD rent assistance money is used properly. The OIG investigates complaints about tenants, landlords, businesses, or agencies that are not following the rules of the Section 8 program. To report Section 8 fraud, contact the OIG Hotline:

SNAP food stamps TAFDC |
The Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI), part of the State Auditor's Office, is in charge of fraud prevention for SNAP food stamps, TAFDC, and other DTA public assistance programs in Massachusetts. The BSI has a 24-hour confidential Fraud Hotline at 1-800-FRAUD-99, run by the Department of Transitional Assistance, to report cases of fraud in DTA programs, including SNAP food stamps and TAFDC. The State Auditor's Office also has an online Fraud Reporting Form, a fraud hotline (617- 727-6771), and an e-mail "Information Line" that you can use to report fraud: Infoline@SAO.state.ma.us. | Social Security programs |
The Office of the Inspector General (OIC) of the Social Security Administration (SSA) is in charge of fraud prevention for Social Security programs. The OIC has a fraud hotline for reporting SSA fraud, waste, or abuse. You can report fraud, waste, or abuse:
When you make a report, you should give as many details as possible, including the name, Social Security number, date of birth, address, and phone number of the person committing the fraud, and any victims. For more information, see Report Fraud, Waste, or Abuse on the SSA web site. |
| Workers' Compensation |
The Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) of Massachusetts is in charge of fraud prevention for workers' compensation and other types of insurance. To report an employee who is making a false claim, or to report any other type of workers' compensation fraud, call the Insurance Fraud Hotline at 1-800-32FRAUD (1-800-323-7283). You can also use the IFB Hotline Tip Form on the IFB web site. You do not have to give your name. To report an employer who does not have workers' compensation insurance, call the Department of Industrial Accidents Employer Fraud Hotline at 1-877-MASSAFE (877-627-7233) x214. |
