What is TAFDC?
Transitional Aid to Families with Dependent Children (TAFDC) is a government program that gives cash and medical assistance to needy families with dependent children, including pregnant women, to help them meet the basic needs of their children. It is sometimes called "welfare."
Who runs the TAFDC program?
TAFDC is paid for by the federal government. The Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) is in charge of the TAFDC program in Massachusetts.
Who is in charge of fraud prevention?
The Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI), part of the State Auditor's Office, is in charge of fraud prevention for public assistance programs in Massachusetts.
The BSI has a 24-hour confidential Fraud Hotline at 1-800-FRAUD-99, run by the Department of Transitional Assistance, to report cases of fraud in DTA programs, including TAFDC.
The State Auditor's Office also has an e-mail "Information Line" that you can use to report fraud: Infoline@SAO.state.ma.us
