What is an eligibility check?

An eligibility check is an easy way for you to find out if you are likely to qualify for SSI by answering online questions about your living situation, your age, how much money you have, and the value of things you own. You will see the results of the eligibility check right away, on your computer screen. It should take no more than fifteen minutes of your time, from start to finish.

An eligibility check is not an official application. However, it will give you a good idea of the kinds of questions you will have to answer when you apply and whether you are likely to be eligible for benefits.

Is this eligibility check confidential?

This eligibility check is completely confidential. There are no questions that ask for any personal information about you. We do not ask for your name, your address, or any other information that would identify you.

What questions are asked?

This eligibility check has two sets of questions. There are general questions about you and your family, such as your age, whether anyone in your family is disabled or blind, and whether you are citizens or legal immigrants. There are also questions about your resources, such as how much money you have in savings and the value of things you own.

To answer the eligibility check questions accurately, you may have to check your records. The results of the eligibility check will only be correct if the information you enter is correct.

What do the results mean?

The eligibility check results will show if you are likely to be eligible for SSI at this time, based on the general eligibility and resource information you entered.

In addition to resource limits, SSI also has income limits. Because the rules regarding income are complicated, income eligibility is NOT included in this SSI eligibility check. If you meet the general eligibility and resource eligibility requirements for SSI, you should call or visit the Social Security office to discuss income limits.

If the results show that you are not likely to be eligible for SSI, you will be told why. If you do not agree with the reason(s) given, or if you believe that your household has special circumstances that were not taken into account, you should discuss your situation with the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Remember: This eligibility check is not an application for SSI and the results are not official. The only way you can know officially if you are eligible or not is by filing an application with the SSA.
