Football and spirit squads
American Youth Football and Cheer
American Youth Football and Cheer is an international organization that promotes youth football and cheerleading for children and teens. Communities that join AYF/AYC usually offer flag football, tackle football, and cheer squads for ages 7 to 14. Local leagues make their own rules within AYF/AYC guidelines.
To protect the safety of the participants and to make the competitions fair, children of similar ages and weights are assigned to teams and squads. There are special provisions for football players whose weight is lower than average for their age group (older/lighter). All programs teach basic skills, fitness, and conditioning, and encourage good sportsmanship, respect, and academic excellence. AYF is a national partner of the National Football League.
The fee for AYF/AYC programs is set by the local organizations. The fee usually covers uniforms and equipment, transportation, insurance, referees, and field fees.
Pop Warner Football and Spirit programs
Pop Warner offers tackle football, flag football, traditional spirit squads (football season), and year-round spirit squads in communities throughout Massachusetts. Tackle football is for children ages 7 to 16, and flag football for children 5 to 16, grouped by age and size to reduce injuries. The Spirit Program (cheerleading and dance) is open to children and teens age 7 to 15. All programs are open to both boys and girls of all abilities.
Students who want to take part in Pop Warner programs must show that they are doing satisfactory work in school. In general, they must have an average of 70% or better, or get a letter from their school.
NFL Youth Football
NFL Youth Football helps local organizations host punt, pass, and kick (PPK) competitions in the summer and fall. These competitions are free of charge and open to boys and girls ages 8 to 15. NFL Youth Football also helps organize flag football leagues for boys and girls ages 6 to 14. There are two seasons per year, spring and fall.
