What is MassSAVE?

MassSAVE is an energy savings program for Massachusetts homeowners and renters. MassSAVE offers energy tips and information about free home energy assessments, energy-saving products, and loans, rebates, and other incentives for energy-saving home improvements.

MassSAVE also provides information, incentives, and services to Massachusetts businesses and industry professionals.

MassSAVE is a partnership between the Massachusetts gas and electric utility companies and local sellers and installers of home energy conservation products.

Am I eligible?

MassSAVE is for Massachusetts residents who want to save money by making their homes more energy efficient.

Anyone can use the MassSAVE web site or telephone line to see which rebates, loans, home energy assessments, or other energy programs are available to them. Most programs are for homeowners or tenants who live in 1-to-4 unit dwellings and pay their own heat or electricity. Low-income residents may qualify for free services.

In-home assessments are for residents who are ready to invest in energy-saving home improvements. Some residents may qualify for free energy-saving light bulbs, showerheads, faucet aerators, and weather stripping. Tenants must get permission from their landlords for some energy improvements.

MassSAVE is also available to business owners and industry professionals interested in energy efficiency.

What benefits will I get?

MassSAVE has information about a variety of money-saving energy programs. These include:

  • Financial incentives:
You may be eligible for rebates, discounts, or other incentives on energy-saving products, depending on where you live and the type of energy you use. Incentive programs come and go, but may include

    • a $50 rebate to recycle a second refrigerator or freezer
    • rebates to replace old appliances with energy-efficient ones
    • rebates on Energy Star qualified refrigerators and freezers, swimming pool filters, and room air cleaners
    • rebates on energy-efficient heating and cooling systems
    • special pricing on Energy Star light fixtures and compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), and advanced power strips
  • Energy Savings - Get the Facts:
You can find information about ways to save energy and money at home. See Lighting & Appliance: Get the Facts and Heating & Cooling: Get the Facts for details.

  • Major Renovations Program:
If you plan to renovate, remodel, or make other home improvements, you can get free technical support and financial incentives to make your home more energy efficient. An energy specialist will come to your home to recommend ways to make your home more energy efficient. You may be eligible for a 75% rebate on recommended improvements, up to $2000. You may also qualify for free energy-efficient CFL light bulbs.

  • Weatherization rebates:
Utilities and energy improvement companies offer rebates to residents who install certain energy-saving products. Rebate amounts vary depending on the utility company and the product you install. Rebates may be available for attic, basement, or wall insulation; Energy Star replacement windows, thermostats, and appliances; high efficiency hot water heaters and heating systems; and central air conditioning. Other products may also qualify. You may be eligible for a 75% rebate (up to $2000) on approved home energy improvements.

  • Appliance Management Program:
Lower-income utility customers who qualify for the discount rate can get a free home energy assessment. The assessment includes metering of your refrigerator and other appliances to see how much energy they use. You may qualify for a free energy-efficient refrigerator, light bulbs, showerhead, weather stripping, and other energy saving products.

MassSAVE also offers financial incentives and technical assistance to businesses; and training/certifications, incentives, and marketing opportunities to industry professionals.

What is the Great Appliance Exchange rebate program?

The MassSAVE Great Appliance Exchange is a rebate program that took place on Earth Day, April 22, 2010. The program gave rebates to Massachusetts residents who replaced old dishwashers, refrigerators, clothes washers, and freezers with energy saving appliances. The program was supposed to last about three weeks, but funds ran out in less than one day.

Each household was allowed one rebate for each product type (in other words, one dishwaher rebate, one refrigerator rebate, etc.), up to four rebates per household. The rebate could not be more than the cost of the appliance. Rebate amounts were:

  • $250 - dishwashers
  • $200 - refrigerators
  • $175 - clothes washers
  • $ 50 - freezers

Many residents who wanted rebates were not able to get them before funds ran out. The state Department of Energy Resources announced that there would be a second round of rebates during the summer of 2010. For updates, check the Department of Energy Resources web site.
