What is MassSAVE?
MassSAVE is an energy savings program for Massachusetts homeowners and renters. MassSAVE offers energy tips and information about free home energy assessments, energy-saving products, and loans, rebates, and other incentives for energy-saving home improvements.
MassSAVE is a partnership between the Massachusetts gas and electric utility companies and local sellers and installers of home energy conservation products.
Am I eligible?
MassSAVE is for Massachusetts residents who want to save money by making their homes more energy efficient.
Anyone can use the MassSAVE web site or telephone line to see which rebates, loans, home energy assessments, or other energy programs are available to them. Most programs are for homeowners or tenants who live in 1-to-4 unit dwellings and pay their own heat or electricity. Low-income residents may qualify for free services.
In-home assessments are for residents who are ready to invest in energy-saving home improvements. Some residents may qualify for free energy-saving light bulbs, showerheads, faucet aerators, and weather stripping. Tenants must get permission from their landlords for some energy improvements.
What benefits will I get?
MassSAVE has information about a variety of money-saving energy programs. These include:

-
Home Energy Assessment (HEA):
Residents who are ready to make energy-saving home improvements can request a free home energy assessment. An energy specialist will come to your home to assess your energy use and recommend ways to make your home more energy efficient. The specialist will check your living space, attic, and basement, and will look at your electricity and heating bills for the past year. The specialist will recommend cost-effective improvements and will tell you about rebates and other incentives. In some cases, you can get a 50% rebate on recommended improvements, up to $1500. You may also qualify for free energy-efficient light bulbs, showerheads, faucet aerators, and weather stripping.
-
HEAT Loan Program:
The HEAT Loan Program helps homeowners pay for energy-saving home improvements. Homeowners who live in a 1-to-4 unit dwelling can get a no-interest or low-interest loan (up to 3%) for:
- insulation and air sealing (attics, basements, walls, ducts)
- high-efficiency hot water heaters and heating systems
- Energy Star replacement windows
- Energy Star thermostats
The maximum loan amount is $15,000. Loan terms are up to seven years with no prepayment penalty. Homeowners must have a MassSAVE home energy assessment to get the loan.
-
Weatherization rebates:
Utilities and energy improvement companies offer rebates to residents who install certain energy-saving products. Rebate amounts vary depending on the utility company and the product you install. Rebates may be available for attic, basement, or wall insulation; Energy Star replacement windows, thermostats, and appliances; high efficiency hot water heaters and heating systems; and central air conditioning. Other products may also qualify. You may be eligible for a 50% rebate (up to $1500) on approved home energy improvements.
-
Appliance Management Program:
Lower-income utility customers who qualify for the discount rate can get a free home energy assessment. The assessment includes metering of your refrigerator and other appliances to see how much energy they use.
