What are my rights when I apply for SNAP food stamps?
When you apply for SNAP food stamps, you have the right to:
- File an application and have it accepted on the same day that you go to the food stamp office. You do not need all of your documents to file your application.
- Be treated politely and respectfully.
- Have an adult who knows you apply for you if you cannot get to the food stamp office.
- Not be discriminated against because of your age, sex, race, color, disability, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, national origin, or political beliefs.
- Be given an interpreter if you need one.
- Receive a list of the documents you need and other forms of proof that DTA will accept.
- Have any information you give kept private unless you give DTA permission to share it.
What are my rights when I receive SNAP food stamps?
When you receive SNAP food stamps, you have the right to:
- Get your SNAP food stamps within 30 days after you apply if you qualify for them.
- Get SNAP food stamps within 7 days if you qualify for emergency SNAP food stamps because of immediate need.
- Look at your own case file and a copy of the Food Stamp Program rules.
- Have a service provider explain how your benefits were computed.
- Be told in advance if the DTA is going to reduce or end your benefits during your certification period because of a change in your situation.
- File an appeal if you disagree with any action taken on your case, and bring a friend or relative to the hearing with you.
What are my responsibilities when I apply for SNAP food stamps?
When you apply for SNAP food stamps, you must:
- Answer all questions completely and honestly and sign your name to certify that all your answers are true.
- Ask for an explanation of any application questions that you don’t understand so you don’t accidentally give false information.
- Provide proof that you are eligible within 30 days of your application. (You can get an extension of 8-15 days if needed.)
- Not put your money or other assets in someone else’s name in order to qualify for SNAP food stamps.
- Keep your appointments or call to reschedule if necessary.
What are my responsibilities when I receive SNAP food stamps?
When you receive SNAP food stamps, you must:
- Report any changes in your income, assets, expenses, or household situation that DTA tells you to report. If you get any extra SNAP food stamps because you have not reported the right information, you will have to pay back the value of the extra SNAP food stamps.
- Not sell, trade, or give away your SNAP food stamps or any food stamp cards or documents.
- Use SNAP food stamps only to buy allowed food items.
