What is an eligibility check?

An eligibility check is an easy way for you to find out if you are likely to qualify for TAFDC by answering online questions about your family, your living situation, your income, and your expenses. You will see the results of the eligibility check right away, on your computer screen. It should take no more than fifteen minutes of your time, from start to finish.

An eligibility check is not an official application. However, it will give you a good idea of the kinds of questions you will have to answer when you apply and whether you are likely to be eligible for benefits.

Is this eligibility check confidential?

This eligibility check is completely confidential. There are no questions that ask for any personal information about you. We do not ask for your name, your address, or any other information that would identify you.

What questions are asked?

This eligibility check has two sets of questions. There are general questions about your family and work situation, such as the number of people in your household, whether you have children, if anyone is disabled, and whether you are working. There are also questions about your finances, such as how much money you make and how much you have in savings.

To answer the eligibility check questions accurately, you may have to check your records. You may need to look at pay stubs, bank statements, or pension checks. The results of the eligibility check will only be correct if the information you enter is correct.

What do the results mean?

The eligibility check results will show if you are likely to be eligible for TAFDC at this time, based on the information you entered. They will also tell you approximately how much you will get in TAFDC benefits. If the results show that you are not likely to be eligible for TAFDC, you will be told the reason why.

If you do not agree with the results, or if your household has special circumstances that were not taken into account, you should talk to your DTA service provider.

Remember: This eligibility check is not an application for TAFDC and the results are not official. The only way you can know officially if you are eligible for TAFDC is by filing an application with the Department of Transitional Assistance.
