Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a cash assistance program for people who are 65 or older and for people of any age who are disabled or blind. SSI is for people with little income and few assets. The money comes mostly from the Federal government, but the state of Massachusetts also contributes.
To get SSI, you must be disabled, blind, or age 65 or older, and have limited income and resources. You must live in the United States and either be a citizen or an eligible noncitizen.
The SSI Eligibility Check is an easy way for you to find out if you are likely to qualify for SSI benefits, by answering questions online about your living situation, your age, how much money you have, and the value of things you own. You will see the results of the eligibility check right away, on your computer screen.
SSI recipients will not get a cost of living adjustment (COLA) in 2010 because consumer prices have gone down, not up. SSI monthly benefits for 2010 will stay at the same level as 2009. |
SSI provides monthly cash payments that vary in amount depending on your personal situation. The maximum monthly benefit for a single person age 65 or older paying full living costs is about $800. The more income you have, the lower your SSI payment will be. You will also be eligible for MassHealth, food stamps, disaster and moving expenses, burial expenses, and fuel assistance.
To apply for SSI, you should call Social Security’s toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 or call or go to your local Social Security office. Use Social Security's Local Office Search to find the address and phone number of your local office.
You may choose to have your SSI payment deposited directly into your bank account or Direct Express debit account, or you may have a check sent to you by mail.
