Aging Services Access Points

Description:

Aging Services Access Points (ASAPs) are one-stop entry points for all of the services and benefits available to seniors in Massachusetts. These agencies provide information, applications, direct services, and referrals.

ASAPs manage the state-based Massachusetts Home Care Program, and work with Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs), established under the federal Older Americans Act, to make sure that seniors have access to all essential services. In Massachusetts, many senior agencies are combined ASAPs/AAAs.

Services:

ASAPs offer these services for seniors and caregivers:

  • Information and referrals for senior services, including home care services, housing options, public benefits, legal assistance, hospice care, the ombudsman program, health insurance, senior companions, and adult day care

  • Elder care advisors

  • Protective services, to prevent the abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation of seniors by their caregivers

  • Elder-at-risk services, to protect seniors who may need help to live safely and independently at home

  • Case management for eligible seniors, including:

    • needs assessment
    • screening and eligibility determination for institutional or community-based long-term care
    • development of a service plan
    • help with applications for public benefits
    • coordination and purchase of needed services
    • monitoring and reassessment of needs
  • Caregiver support

  • Nutrition services

  • Online resources; printed booklets and fact sheets; lending libraries

Some services are given to all seniors free of charge. Other services are only available to seniors who meet program eligibility requirements.

Councils on Aging / Senior Centers
