What is the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau?

The Harvard Legal Aid Bureau is a student-run non-profit law firm that provides free legal services to low income people. Services are provided by court-certified student attorneys who are supervised and taught by practicing attorneys. Funding comes from the Harvard Law School and private contributions.

The Harvard Legal Aid Bureau helps with civil legal problems involving:

  • housing, including evictions and Section 8 terminations
  • family law issues such as divorce, child custody, paternity, and support
  • government benefits, including TAFDC, SSI, SSDI, MassHealth, unemployment insurance, and food stamps
  • wage and hour issues, such as nonpayment of wages or unpaid overtime

The Harvard Legal Aid Bureau does not accept cases involving:

  • criminal law
  • immigration
  • mental health issues
  • AIDS
  • debt and bankruptcy
  • estates and wills
  • personal injury or workers' compensation claims
  • non-Massachusetts legal issues

Am I eligible?

To qualify for free legal help from the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, you must:

  • be a resident of Suffolk County or parts of Middlesex County
  • have a legal problem regarding housing, family law, government benefits, or wage and hour law
  • have little or no income

What benefits will I get?

If the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau agrees to take your case, a student attorney will:

  • investigate your case
  • give you legal advice
  • prepare and file any legal documents needed for your case
  • negotiate on your behalf
  • represent you at hearings or in court

Student attorneys are supervised by licensed practicing attorneys.

How do I apply?

To apply, call the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau at 617-495-4408, Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. A staff member will ask you about your legal problem, your income, and where you live to determine if you are eligible for services. If you are eligible, the Bureau will arrange for you to have an in-person interview with a student attorney. After the interview, the Bureau will let you know if they can take your case.
