Public education is free education provided by the government, usually paid for by taxes. Massachusetts offers several types of public education programs for children in elementary school, middle school, and high school. The Massachusetts Department of Education (DOE) oversees all public education programs in the state.
All children in Massachusetts have the right to free public education. Citizens and noncitizens can attend Massachusetts public schools and receive special education services regardless of immigration status. Homeless children have special protections.
Massachusetts public school children can attend:
Parents can also meet the Massachusetts mandatory school attendance requirements by homeschooling their children or sending them to approved private schools.
Each public school district has its own enrollment procedures. Some school districts register children at the local schools, some at a parent information center, and some at the school district office. You should bring proof of your child's age, proof of residency, and medical and immunization records.
All public schools must follow state regulations regarding days in session, structured learning time, and licensing of teachers. Local school districts make most curriculum decisions, but all public school students must pass statewide MCAS tests to graduate. Public schools offer many special services to meet the needs of their students.
