What is Health Law Advocates?
Health Law Advocates is a small non-profit law firm that helps people who have legal problems concerning health insurance or medical care. Health Law Advocates is affiliated with Health Care for All, a non-profit advocacy group that works to make quality health care available to all in need.
Health Law Advocates helps with legal problems concerning:
- MassHealth or other government health insurance programs
- private health insurance plans
- Health Safety Net (Free Care) eligibility
- high medical bills not covered by insurance
Because of limited funds, Health Law Advocates gives priority to certain types of legal issues. These include:
- resolving problems with the Massachusetts health reform laws
- making sure children have access to mental health services
- assisting consumers who have high medical bills and protecting consumers from future medical debt
- helping women and children stay insured after divorce
- improving access to dental care
- trying to keep community hospitals open
- improving medical care for inmates
Am I eligible?
To qualify for Health Law Advocates services, you must:
- be a resident of Massachusetts
- have a legal problem with health insurance or medical care
- meet the income limits shown below
- be unable to afford a private lawyer
To be eligible, gross family income should be no greater than 300% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (FPG):

What benefits will I get?
If Health Law Advocates takes your case, they will give you free legal advice and free legal representation.
Unfortunately, Health Law Advocates (HLA) has limited resources and cannot help everyone who is eligible. If they cannot take your case, they will try to refer you to someone else who can help.
Health Law Advocates does not take medical malpractice or workers' compensation cases.
How do I apply?
To apply, call Health Law Advocates at 617-338-5241 or call the Health Care for All Helpline at 1-800-272-4232.
